So just a quick update while I'm in the middle of doing work/lesson plans for the coming week!
The rain did not let up at all this weekend and so our plans of going out and fishing or shooting guns kept getting cancelled so today, we decided to make good use of our last day off and we went out in the rain. The four of use briefly talking about it over dinner last night and so we made those plans and today we stuck to them! Besides a little rain, it turned out to be an awesome time! Speaking of dinner, it was great! Moose, dried salmon, mashed potatoes, some left over chicken, rice and I even made my gram's baked corn recipe! Now, I didn't have three of the ingredients I needed so I improvised but it turned out pretty well considering! Not as good as yours though, Gram ; )
The four of us loaded onto one four wheeler - yes, that was comical - and headed down to the river. I don't know how far away it was but it took about 10 minutes I think! I'm not 100% sure, I was trying not to fall off the side of the four wheelers so I didn't take notice, haha!
Macy did not get to come with me but she survived just fine here at home. I'm still waiting for her crate to arrive so I can put her into that during the times when I'm gone - she's WAY too good at getting out of the bathroom, no matter how I have it blocked off.
We did not catch any fish - with a rod or in the net we set out but it's okay. Apparently it's pretty much the end of the fish season but dog fish (or chum) are still running. They're a type of salmon but apparently they're not very good so most people just give them to their dogs. Hence the name! However, we did not catch any type! Bummer!
Tonight I am getting lesson plans done and getting an idea of how my week is going to look. I went over to the school today with full intentions of getting so much accomplished but that quickly turned into a Skype date with my parents until I got the text that it was time to go fishing! I could venture back over tonight but I feel too bad leaving my little baby penned up again. You think she's got me hooked? ; ) So it's working from home tonight and then in early tomorrow! It's okay - that's part of the adventure living and teaching in bush Alaska!
Here are my pictures from today:
Just making my dad proud, haha! Now I just need my own ; )
In the winter when this river is frozen, most people from Manokotak use their snow machines and take a 40 ish minute ride across this river and across the tundra to Dillingham to get food/supplies or just go into town for a little while. This is the stop that you cross at to go that way!
So much mud! I'm shocked I did not wipe out... I had a couple close calls!
Ryan and Jason! Ryan teachers 4th/5th right next to me and then Jason teaches Kindergarten.
Rainy, rainy day! Thank goodness for rain gear!
LeEsia and I! She is Ryan's wife and one of the SpEd teachers at the school... also a good friend of mine. : )
Throwing the net in hopes to catch some salmon!
But, no such luck!
Time for some target practice! This time with the pistol... I hit the target a few times!
Pistol again.
Sun started to poke through!
I can't remember what type of gun this is... a 40 or something? This little thing has A LOT of power and hurt my hand after a few shots. It's a semi-automatic so I could just keep pulling the trigger. It was a fun gun to shoot. I also shot a 22 today, as well. This is something I really enjoy!!
Took this for you granny - the name of the boat is the "Sally Ann" haha.
Just snapping some pictures on the way back... so many pretty colors and shades of green! Soon it will look completely different. Once again, I live in a really beautiful place!
That's all for now! Four day week -- woo hoo!
Your pictures are amazing!! and as always I enjoy reading your blog! makes me smile to read your advetures!! :) Shooting the guns is fun, isn't!!!???!! i loved it!!
